Hike up to Mause Creek.
Patrick and Ellen Dearden, who are very familiar with this area, are going to be our guest guides. This is an awesome place to go for a hike with so much to see! There is an old mine site with tailings and old cabins. Beyond that is an alpine meadow which will be full of beautiful alpine flowers at that time of year as well as the tarns. Lots of picas and marmots to be seen.

should see a significant change in the bird population at this next Explorer
Day including ducklings and goslings. For those who came to the May 4th
Explorer Day, if you can bring your bird watching journals that would be great.
We will have bird watching journals available for those who weren't able to
make it last time.

Several members from the Rocky Mountain Naturalists Club will be our guest guides. The NatureKids will learn about the identification of common local birds as well as about the behaviour and habitats of these birds. If you have binoculars or bird books, please bring them along.

NatureKids' Club Christmas Explorer Day/Party

Our guest guides and they are going to teach us how to identify birds by their bird calls. Afterwards, the children will have a chance to make Christmas tree ornaments that are for the birds (and probably some squirrels) to eat. Then children will be able to go out into Idlewild Park to decorate a couple trees with the decorations that they have made as their Christmas gift to nature. The City of Cranbrook has given us permission to decorate these trees. Also the children will get to make a snack for reindeers that they can leave outside on Christmas Eve. We thought it would be kind of fun to make this Explorer Day into a bit of a Christmas Party for the club so if anyone wants to bring Christmas goodies to share that would be great. We'll have hot chocolate there too. If there is enough snow then the children could go sleigh riding afterwards too so please bring your toboggans (and helmets).
