Join the Lynn Canyon Ecology Centre’s own group of nature explorers!  We meet once per month usually on a Sunday from 1 to 2:30 pm. Guest scientists, we call Nature Mentors, will share their love of nature with us.

The Lynn Canyon Ecology Centre has several enthusiastic leaders for our NatureKids Club programs. Tricia is the head emailer, and she’ll sign you up for the club and let you know about other NatureKids events.

Bird Language

Learn how to speak bird! Join Stephanie McKay of Souring Eagle Nature School to discover what the birds are talking about and how they can tell you what's going on in the forest.

Magnifcent Moss and Lovely Lichen

What's growing on right under your feet? Mosses and lichens may be small, but they're also fascinating. Join Brian Herrin to explore the miniature world of mosses and lichens.

Maplemood Mudflats Shoreline Cleanup
Sunday May 28th


Visit Maplewood Mudflats, a unique intertidal mudflat on the North Shore. Learn about its shoreline life and its importance as stop-off for migratory birds; then help keep the Mudflats clean.

Bird Banding
Sunday June 29th


What do you know about migratory birds? Join the Vancouver Avian Research Centre for a morning of learning about the science behind bird banding. Watch them as they band the migratory birds at Colony Farm. Please note: We will meet at the banding station at Colony Farm

Handmade Nature Journals

By observing nature, creating drawings, and reflecting on what you've seen, you get to know our local plants and animals. Join Carabeth Rudelsheim to needle felt a cover for a nature journal, then head outside to observe and record the plants and animals of the rainforest.

Bee Houses & Oil Spills 
(with NatureKids TriCities)
Located at Burnaby Campus
Solitary bees make homes in hollow, tube-like structures that can be naturally occurring or created by humans. The naturally occurring ones are disappearing from the Lower Mainland, but we can help! Learn about bees while making structures for leaf cutter bees to lay eggs in and hide from predators. This workshop is in partnership with Science in Action and is designed for students from K - Grade 7.

Oddball Edibles

You can eat what? Go beyond berries to learn about the oddball edible plants of the temperate rainforest.


Bird Banding
Saturday, May 7th 7-9:30 am (May 8th rain date)

Visit the Vancouver Avian Research Centre’s bird banding program at Colony Farm, where we’ll learn how banding helps scientists study local and migratory bird species. We’ll have the opportunity to observe the collection and banding process and release some of the birds.

Ivy Weaving

Ivy is an invasive species, but it can also be incredibly useful! Join local craftsperson Rebecca Graham to learn basic weaving skills and turn this unwanted species into a wonderful weaving. Please bring an $8 materials fee to class.

Visit the Morten Creek salmon hatchery in lower Lynn Creek to learn about fish, enjoy a tour with the North Shore Streamkeepers, and help salmon by planting native plants. We will meet at Morten Creek.

Take off on our annual visit to Colony Farm Regional Park in Coquitlam to band birds with the Vancouver Avian Research Centre. We'll learn about bird research and keep our wings crossed in the hopes of seeing many resident and migratory species.

Winged Wonders

Who's that buzzing around your garden? Bees are about much more than honey. Both honey bees and native species are an integral part of the plant life cycle. Local beekeeper Lianne Shyry will guide you through the world of bumblebees, mason bees, honey bees, and more.

Howl

1 pm to 2:30 pm
Walk on the wild side with Jenna Rudolph from Soaring Eagle Nature School. Jenna is an experienced tracker who will talk about tracking some of the temperate forest's most fascinating creatures: wolves and coyotes. You'll get to practice your tracking skills as we venture outside to search for animal tracks and signs.
