Meet your volunteer leader! Michal is a mother of 2 girls. She fell in
love with the sea the first time she went snorkeling and with the rest of the
outdoors when she discovered hiking. She's been sharing her passion with her
kids since they were tiny. Her eldest was fortunate to be a member of a very
active Young Naturalists Club (now NatureKids) when she was younger. Now the younger one wants
the same chance, so Michal has started up a group for the her and the rest
of the home learners in Delta who want to get connected to nature and have fun times
together.

We are doing it again for everyone who didn't make it to the previous broom pulls and everyone who just wants to use those clippers and saws again. We are partnering with the regional parks and Boundary Bay Park Association to cut down a new patch of invasive scotch broom at Boundary Bay Park. This time we'll meet at the other park entrance. Dress for the weather and bring a water bottle. (And maybe a change of clothes if it is wet/cold). The parks will provide gloves, safety glasses, healthy snacks and tools/training.

We'll meet at the park where we'll learn how to use loupes to get a close up view of nature. Then we'll go for a walk on the trails and find things to examine. Back at the park, we'll get creative with the loupes and some of our favorite natural objects and create poetry and pictures based on what we see. If you have a 5X or 10X loupe, please bring it along. Other magnifiers are welcome too. And if you have a nature journal or sketchbook, you can bring that too. Otherwise drawing materials and loupes will be provided.

Draw a Bird

Location: Reifel Bird Sanctuary, 5191 Robertson Rd, Delta

We are going to learn how to draw a bird from Kathleen, an artist/biologist who really knows the birds at the sanctuary. We'll be working both in the on-site museum and outdoors. Parents can participate too. All materials will be provided. Cost: Free to those with Reifel membership, otherwise $2.50/adult and $1.50/child.
We need 15 kids minimum to make this happen and there is a maximum group size of 30 (including the adults) so be sure to RSVP on time if you want to go. Kathleen suggests that any younger siblings coming along will have more fun exploring the sanctuary, so if you have younger kids with you, you might want to plan on spending some time visiting the ducks while the bigger kids are working in the museum. Bags of bird seed are sold on site for $1 each.

Birding & Solstice Cookout
Date: Sunday October 2, 2016
Time: 3:00 pm - 6:30 pm (birding begins at 4 pm)
Location: Centennial Beach, Tsawwassen (meet at the playground)
The Vancouver NatureKids club has planned a fun outing at Centennial Beach and invited us along. Come anytime between 3:00 to 4:00 pm to enjoy the amazing playground and beach area. From 4:00-5:00 pm Tom Bears of the Delta Naturalist Club will lead us to explore some of the resident birds and perhaps lead a scavenger hunt!
Around 5 pm we will be asking interested and intrepid parents to help us chop some wood for the fire and to have a lovely campfire on the beach. The Vancouver Club will supply hot dogs (beef and vegetarian), buns, condiments, hot chocolate, and of course marshmallows. If you would like to bring a potluck side, that would be welcome but definitely not required. If anyone happens to have an ax or a roasting stick, please bring them along!

We are going to learn about edible weeds. We will search the Delta Community Farm and maybe Earthwise for some delicious weeds and learn about how to use them. Then we'll make a weed and veggie salad and tea, so bring along plates or bowls, forks and mugs.

In this two hour workshop, we will learn about how artists are pushing the boundaries of how art can be made by creating art in nature (also known as “Earthworks”). We will learn about how artists like Andy Goldsworthy collaborate with nature to create fascinating and beautiful sculptures using only the materials that they find at a specific natural location. Andrew will begin the workshop with a short artist talk and presentation on Andy Goldsworthy and then will support the students individually with all aspects of the creation of their sculptures.

We'll park in the lot above the hatchery building and meet at the hatchery at 9:50 so everyone has time to sign in before the tour starts. We will be visiting the salmon hatchery and walking the nature trails along the Little Campbell River. There is the option to stay after the tour for a picnic in the gazebo.

We will build feeders from recycled materials, learn what to put in them, where to put them, and learn about some of the birds that might visit them. Karen will also talk about how you can become citizen scientists through Project Feeder Watch.
