Current Explorer Days and Events
For our June event we will join the Comox Valley YNC for a hike to Tree Island! This event will take place on Sunday, June 19th and will be a full-day hike.
The weekend of June 18/19 are the only weekends in June that work tide wise. The 19th (Father's Day) was chosen because some members have let me know they have conflicts on the 18th (soccer, etc.).
The details are: The Comox Valley group will take the 10am ferry to Denman Island (meet at 9:30 at the Ferry Terminal). The walk will take about 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on our speed. It may be a sunny & wet walk so people should wear hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and watershoes.
We'll arrive at Tree Island about 12:30 pm and have lunch and do some exploring and maybe some swimming (although the tide will be low). Depending on how long it took us to walk we'll have about 2 hours on Tree Island and head back to our cars for 4:15pm to be on the 5pm ferry that day back to Buckley Bay.
Because of the length of the walk we're suggesting that this event is for the hearty walker 8 years and over. Here is a good article on Tree Island exploring, written by naturalist Krista Kaptein: http://islandnature.ca/2010/
Please mark your calendar on Feb. 17-20, for the Secret Tree Festival of Art and Sustainability on Denman Island. The festival is organized by Arts Denman and will include art workshops, lectures, music performances, a vegan feast and more. Please see the website for details www.artsdenman.com .
One special event for older YNC members with a camera is the Secret Tree Photography Walk lead by biologist/photographer Jenny Balke. The walk will take place on Saturday, February 19th at 9:45 am. This will be a chance to explore and photograph the special trees found in the Lindsay Dickson Nature Reserve, followed on Sunday, by the presentation of the group's photos at the Festival.
Photography-walk participants will meet at the entrance to the Lindsay Dickson Nature Reserve at the top of Mallard Way (off Owl Crescent) at 9:45. Photographers will need to bring their own digital camera. Those who wish to have their photos included in the Sunday presentation will need to be able to send their photos by email to lontracan@gmail.com on Saturday, or arrange to bring their photos on a memory stick or DVD to the Arts Centre, by Sunday morning . Please dress weather appropriately. This session is recommended for ages 12 and up.
I hope you can attend a Mushroom Walk on Saturday, October 2nd at 10:30 am with Andrew Fyson. He will lead us on a walk in the forest near Winter Wren Wood where there should be lots of mushrooms growing, and help us to learn to identify them.
Andrew is a Scientist and an Artist,
with a background in Botany. He will be happy to share his knowledge of nature
photography with us, so bring your camera if you have one. You should also
bring a basket or paper bag if you want to collect edible mushrooms to take
home.
We will meet in the parking area of
the Winter Wren Wood Conservancy land on Lake Rd at 10:30 am sharp, rain or shine.
